Has man designed anything more cruel and tortuous than the conibear trap? I doubt it. Animals caught in these traps can suffer terribly for days. Desperate to get away, they often gnaw off their own limbs. They suffer unimaginable, unending terror and agony. If the animal happens to be your pet or a stray pet, the trapper would most likely finish off the job by clubbing them to death. They are little more than a nuisance to the trapper.

If there were actual statistics on the number of pet and domestic animals that are inadvertantly caught in these traps and discarded like trash, an inconvenience to indiscriminate trappers, you would be horrified and furious. No one can gauge the real statistics, would a trapper tell you?

Does the number really matter? Isn't one enough?

What of children? They are in just as much danger as animals, caught up in the excitement of play, they seldom look before taking each step.

Petitions have been started to outlaw all but live Have-a-Heart traps in several states. Reports of people out on a run or hike with their dogs whose dogs were caught in the conibear trap and killed are growing. How many dogs and cats disappear that may have suffered this same fate will never be known, a trapper won't tell you.

Though this particular petition is for the State of New York, you are encouraged to sign it. New York depends on tourist dollars from many other states and countries, your opinion matters.
